Family Medicine is about providing care that’s complete, ongoing and centered on the person. It serves individuals, families and communities. A Family Physician must be skilled in areas and able to handle health issues across all ages, genders, types of illness and life stages. The field also values using science to guide care improving quality using resources wisely and building long-term relationships with patients (Freeman, 2016; WONCA Europe, 2023). Jesus Christ, known as the Divine Physician offers an example for reflecting on these values. His life and work showed compassion and concern for the whole person. Seven key ideas define Family Medicine: comprehensive patient-centered evidence-based quality, cost-effective and longitudinal care. First competent care means having medical knowledge, good clinical skills, clear thinking and the ability to communicate well.
