reply to the discussion Nutrition care “can influence and change the factors that contribute to an imbalance in nutritional status and thus restore nutritional health.” 1 The four steps of the Nutrition Care Process are: “Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention, Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation.” 1 Using the NCP allows dietetic practitioners to demonstrate nutrition care and improve outcomes because it uses a systematic method to make decisions to provide safe and effective care. In regard to my personal experience, I was never one to count calories; but rather track macronutrients. Last semester, I took Principles of Nutrition where we were asked to track our meals for 5-7 days. In that process, we were to look at various vitamins and minerals, and see if we were meeting our recommended intakes. I was pleased and somewhat surprised to see what I was meeting the recommended intakes for most vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, I was exceeding certain things, such as sugar (which I was not surprised about because I definitely have a sweet tooth) and vitamin A. In other areas, I completely missed the recommended intake. I am fairly consistent with my meals so that I can have a general idea of my Marcos and ensure that I’m hitting or at least very close to my goal. Although I’m not one to track my calories, I really appreciated tracking my micronutrients, vitamins and minerals because it made me more aware of where I was lacking and what I should continue doing. I try to maintain a whole food diet, so Principles of Nutrition was very helpful in reinforcing why I chose this diet.
