The article “Expanding the Theoretical Understanding in Advanced Practice Nursing: Framing the Future” emphasizes the importance of continually evolving nursing theory in response to advances in practice and research. Theories must remain adaptable to reflect the changes in healthcare. Polit and Beck define a theory as an abstract generalization that systematically explains relationships among phenomena. Theories differ in their levels of generality and abstraction and help us understand, explain, predict, and systematize knowledge (Hansen et al., 2022). It gives the profession of nursing different approaches to providing quality care. For example, Patricia Benner’s model outlines the progression of nursing proficiency from novice to expert through five stages as a nurse evolves from relying on rules and guidelines, which is the novice stage, to an intuitive and holistic understanding of patient care, which is the expert stage. Research helps test, validate, and refine theories. By pursuing research that resonates with nursing theories, the profession advances and enriches its theoretical frameworks with real-world insights (Baptiste,2023). Research also ensures that practice is founded on evidence, thus improving patient outcomes. For example, evidence supports specific interventions to reduce pressure injury in immobile patients. Practice serves as the testing ground for theoretical concepts and the source of new research questions. Theoretical frameworks underscore the values of empathy, compassion, and patient advocacy. Nurses are empowered to deliver ethical and effective care by integrating evidence-based interventions. My future role as a nurse practitioner will contribute to developing theory and research in several meaningful ways. I will be engaging directly with patients with chronic diseases living in underserved populations; I will be able to observe obstacles that come with noncompliance to medication regimens. Clinical practice will help me to analyze the discrepancies between theoretical frameworks and real-world applications. This helps bridge the gap between research and patient-centered care, further elevating the standard of practice (Baptiste,2023). Applying existing theories to my daily practice will help further validate current theories. As an advanced practice nurse, I can identify new interventions that challenge existing ones. The new practice interventions can help develop new theories that align with the changing demands of healthcare. My role will also contribute to the ongoing research by participating in clinical trials, providing data based on a specific population, completing a needs assessment, and partnering with different academic institutions to conduct research (Lambert & Housden,2017). Particularly, a structured review can be used to inform research and policy initiatives and integrate new knowledge into practice. The connection between theory, practice, and research is vital as it ensures that care continuously evolves to meet the needs of patients and healthcare systems.
