Respond to this post: According to the University of Maryland, “Nursing research began when Florence Nightingale accumulated and analyzed complex information about conditions during the Crimean War (1854-56)”. It seems that her methods of proposing the use of a form of the scientific method in order to help improve healthcare quality was not widely adopted until after her time. In juxtaposition to Nightingale, the history of medical research is also shrouded in a sinister shadow cast by the Nazis in the 1930’s-40’s. “During World War II, German physicians conducted unethical experiments on thousands of human prisoners at the Nazi concentration camps. These experiments were performed without consent and many times without anesthesia (Faulkner et al, 2022)”. Before these unthinkable acts were performed on thousands of helpless victims, there really were not any rules or regulations on how experiments and research could be conducted on human subjects. After World War 2 the Nazi physicians responsible for the evil acts were held accountable. From this the Nuremburg Code was born as the first internationally accepted document that governs the how scientific research can be conducted. Nursing research was ignored and underutilized for so long, but it is now the cornerstone of the nursing profession. It is recognized as the only way to systematically improve practices in order to achieve better patient outcomes. Evidence based practice is reliable as results are able to be proven time and time over. It makes clinical practices and settings infinitely more safe for patients and nurses
