Mrs. Sharon Weeks, who had been diagnosed with COPD three years ago is being seen due to increasing shortness of breath. She is 78 years old and smoked 2 packs per day for 55 years until quitting 3 years ago. You perform a head-to-toe assessment on Mrs. Weeks and note a mild to moderate cyanotic color to her lips and finger tips. You also note that she has a low arterial oxygen levels indicated by the pulse oximeter. The physician orders a chest x-ray which shows areas of fibrotic lung tissue and expanded lung fields. The physician orders to perform spirometry testing now and then have Mrs. Weeks see the phlebotomist to have ABG testing done.
