She uses a wheelchair for mobility. She recently became weaker, is now unable to push the chair herself, and requires assistance with transferring to and from the chair. She has both upper- and lower-extremity weakness. She wears full dentures. Jamie Johnson is a nursing student assigned to care for Mrs. Winkler today. As Jamie is talking with Mrs. Winkler before breakfast is served, she learns that Mrs. Winkler likes to wash her face and hands and then put in her dentures. Mrs. Winkler states, “I want to stay in bed today because I’m tired and I don’t feel well. I just get so weak when I do anything. Also, I think I have sores on the roof of my mouth. They really hurt.” Mrs. Winkler says, “I want to be able to wear my teeth and feel clean and look nice.” Denture-induced stomatitis is related in part to dentures that fit poorly, especially if worn while sleeping (Sciubba, 2009). Mrs. Winkler will describe correct preventive oral hygiene care practices within 1 week.
