reply to the discussion In order to effectively gather both subjective and objective data on dietary intake, a combination of tools like “24- hour dietary recalls, food diaries, and food frequency questionnaires.” 1 As far as anthropometric measurements, “height weight, BMI, and skin fold thickness measurements, and potentially bioelectrical impedance analysis” 2 would be the most useful because each method captures different aspects of dietary habits and body composition. These tools allow for more comprehensive assessments. Some counseling techniques that would be appropriate for a nutrition expert to use would be “active listening, open-ended questioning, motivational interviewing, setting realistic goals, addressing barriers, promoting self-efficacy, mindful eating practices, and providing education while tailoring information to the individual’s needs and lifestyle to effectively guide clients towards healthier eating habits.” 3 All of these techniques make for a personable and educational experience for someone seeking professional nutritional advice. As far as nutritionists promoting public health at the community and population level, I have not hardly enough as far as prevention. Sure, there are plenty of articles and research for various diseases; but in the research aspect, not in the promotional aspect. I hope that this upcoming class of nutritionist, healthcare researchers, and dietetic practitioners make a change in the health education and health promotion aspect in the pillar of public health. There is already so much sound, backed science explaining the benefits and risks; but no where near enough education and promotion on how to manage various diseases, preventing diseases, and stopping the spread of diseases.
