Write a response to a classmate’s discussion: Within the organization I am employed, there still is some of the authoritarian (or top-down approach) to the budgeting process. Each department head gets a portion of the hospital budget, and if there are capital expenses or the need to increase the care staff in your department, that goes before the board and hospital president to make a decision. One of the positives that I have seen throughout my employment is an increase in transparency, specifically since COVID. Our hospital holds town halls twice a year to discuss in depth many aspects of the organization, but most of this focuses on financial transparency. An understanding of the financial health of the organization is important to all employees to ensure the creation of a cost-conscious environment. I also feel that it is important to understand what will motivate your team in regards to delivering issues with cost efficiency. An example would be a change in supplies, or a process that could be improved upon to create less waste – these often are noted by the bedside staff. It is critical for the nurse leader to collaborate with the front line staff when identifying and creating processes that still meet the patient care needs while improving efficiency. Staff should be involved in these processes, aware of the budget constraints, and be motivated to identify ways to provide cost efficient but quality care to patients.
